010: Jean Sok – I never doubted
“I never doubted that I could be a dancer. I knew it might take me longer, but little by little I tried, and eventually I got to where I am right now.” – Jean Sok
This was drawn by Eastfist. Check out his work on his page.
This comic’s story was inspired by Jean Sok’s journey as a one legged dancer. I came across one of his videos and was amazed at his dance skills. Although I don’t want to objectify disabled people as inspirational porn, somehow as a dancer myself, I couldn’t help be inspired just by watching him dance. It’s already difficult to pull off some of these moves, but he can do them regardless. He has taken the usual breakdance moves and added this own flavour to it. Just to clarify, he actually dances with his walking-aids when upright, unlike in the comic.
Sok, also known as B-boy Hourth, was a dancer in Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour which just ended last August. It ran for 3 years, so some of you might have caught it. Needless to say Sok performed marvelously at the concert. If you missed that, Sok is currently in Cirque du Soleil’s next production, Michael Jackson: One.
This quote comes from an interview he had with news.com.au. You can checkout his promo-video here, and his website here.
Although this is a comic about dance and a dancer, I think the principles presented in this comic can be adapted for other endeavours. In the comments below, let me know how you think it can apply to your dream.
